Smart Cities Plan and Australia’s Roadmap

The Smart Cities Plan will position our cities to succeed in the 21st Century economy. It is a plan for supporting productive, accessible, liveable cities that attract talent, encourage innovation and create jobs and growth.

It represents a new framework for cities policy at the federal level – and it is a framework that will guide action across various portfolios, to deliver better outcomes for our cities, the people who live in them and all Australians.

The Smart Cities Plan sets out the Australian Government’s vision for our cities—metropolitan and regional—and its commitment to smart investment, smart policy and smart technology.

Outcomes of Smart Cities Plan consultation

The response to the Smart Cities Plan was strong, with over 130 submissions received. The submissions report provides a summary of responses from individuals and a diverse range of organisations spanning governments, the private sector, not for profits and the research sector.

Submissions—and feedback received through the Smart Cities Summit in April 2016—are shaping how the Australian Government delivers the Smart Cities Plan and City Deals. In response to input the Government is:

  • Establishing a Cities Reference Group to strengthen engagement in cities policy
  • Publishing a generic City Deal process to provide information on the steps for establishing a City Deal
  • Publishing a National Cities Performance Framework to report on the performance of cities
  • Publishing details of the regional City Deal competitive bid process to be used in the selection of City Deals outside Australian cities.

These actions will take place in 2017, with further information published on this website as it becomes available.
