Perhaps the strongest theme to emerge from our Smart City InFocus conference in Yinchuan, China in September was the need to keep people at the center of smart city initiatives. In many ways, this would seem to go without saying – by definition, city workers are there to serve citizens.However, a number of inter-related trends are making this more imperative than ever, as well as more challenging in some ways.New urban challengesAs urbanization intensifies, cities and their citizens are facing new challenges. By 2050, 66 percent of the world’s population will live in cities, up from 54 percent in 2014, according to the United Nations.
